What started as a relatively small bathroom repair quickly turned into a more involved maintenance job.
The original request was to repair a few lifted tiles on the boxing next to the toilet. However, once we inspected the area and looked more closely at the bathroom, it became clear that there were several underlying issues that needed attention.
When we went to begin, we were met with a problem – the bath had dropped considerably in two corners. This had caused the sealant around the edge of the bath to open up, creating an opportunity for water to get behind the surrounding areas.
There were also signs that the boxing underneath the sink and leading towards the toilet had suffered from water damage and had become rotten.
Rather than simply repairing the visible tiles and leaving the underlying problems, we worked through the bathroom to address the issues properly.
The bathroom required a number of repairs and improvements, including:
- Raising and supporting the bath in two corners
- Removing and replacing the damaged framework around the bath panel
- Resealing around the bath with fresh sealant
- Re-laying several floor tiles
- Removing the rotten boxing underneath the sink and leading towards the toilet
- Rebuilding the damaged boxing
- Repairing the originally lifted tiles
By addressing the cause of the problems rather than simply covering up the visible damage, we were able to leave the bathroom in a much better condition.
This is a prime example of why bathroom problems shouldn’t be ignored! Issues such as loose tiles, failed sealant or damaged boxing can sometimes appear to be purely cosmetic. However, in areas exposed to regular moisture, small problems can develop into much bigger ones.
In this case, the failed sealant around the bath had allowed water ingress, contributing to damage behind the visible surfaces.
Getting problems investigated early can help prevent unnecessary damage and potentially more expensive repairs further down the line.
Although this wasn’t originally planned as a full bathroom refurbishment, the job developed as we uncovered the work that was actually needed.
